Ejector Pump Repair, Replacement, and Installation

Plumbing fixtures located below the home’s main sewer line cannot always drain by gravity. An ejector pump collects wastewater from these lower-level fixtures and pumps it upward into the sewer line so it can leave the property.

Heart Heating, Cooling, Plumbing & Electric provides ejector pump repair, replacement, and installation throughout Metro Denver, Aurora, Colorado Springs, and surrounding Front Range communities. Our plumbers service the pump, basin, discharge piping, check valve, controls, and connected drainage components that keep basement plumbing operating properly.

Ejector pumps are part of a larger wastewater system. Heart also provides complete plumbing services for fixtures, piping, water systems, and other essential plumbing equipment throughout the home.

Complete Ejector Pump Services

An ejector pump system must collect wastewater, activate at the correct level, move waste through the discharge pipe, and prevent it from flowing back into the basin. A problem with any of these components can lead to poor drainage, sewage odors, alarms, or wastewater backing up into lower-level fixtures.

Ejector Pump Repair

Ejector pumps operate in demanding conditions and can fail because of worn motors, jammed impellers, damaged float switches, clogged piping, failed check valves, or electrical problems. Heart diagnoses the source of the malfunction and repairs serviceable components when doing so can restore dependable operation.

Signs that an ejector pump may need repair include:

  • The pump does not turn on

  • The pump runs continuously

  • Wastewater drains slowly from basement fixtures

  • An ejector pump alarm activates

  • Sewage odors are coming from the basin

  • The pump makes grinding, humming, or rattling noises

  • The basin fills without emptying

  • Wastewater flows back into the basin

  • Water or sewage appears around the basin lid

  • Toilets, showers, or sinks below the sewer line begin backing up

Ejector pump problems can quickly affect every fixture connected to the basin. Prompt service helps reduce the risk of wastewater overflow and damage to finished basement areas.

Ejector Pump Replacement

Replacement may be more reliable when the pump has a failed motor, extensive internal wear, recurring breakdowns, or insufficient capacity for the connected fixtures. An older pump may also be difficult to repair if critical components are no longer dependable or available.

Heart selects replacement equipment according to the home’s plumbing configuration and wastewater demands. Proper selection accounts for the volume of the basin, vertical pumping distance, discharge pipe size, number of connected fixtures, and type of waste the system must handle.

During replacement, our plumbers also inspect the accessible system components that affect pump performance. Installing a new pump without correcting a blocked discharge line, failed check valve, damaged float, or poorly sealed basin can lead to another system failure.

New Ejector Pump Installation

A sewage ejector pump may be required when adding a bathroom, laundry area, utility sink, or other plumbing fixture below the main sewer line. The system creates a collection point for wastewater that cannot reach the building sewer through gravity alone.

Heart installs ejector pump systems with the necessary basin, pump, discharge piping, venting connections, check valve, shutoff components, sealed lid, and controls. The completed system is tested to verify that wastewater enters the basin properly, activates the pump, and discharges into the sewer line without flowing backward.

Professional installation is especially important for ejector pumps because the basin handles sanitary wastewater. Secure seals, correct venting, reliable discharge piping, and appropriate pump capacity help contain odors and support safe operation.

Ejector Pump Components We Service

An ejector pump system includes several components that must work together. Heart inspects the system as a whole instead of treating every malfunction as a failed pump.

Pump and Motor

The pump provides the force needed to lift wastewater from the basin to the gravity sewer line. Motor wear, internal blockage, overheating, or damaged pump components can stop the system from discharging properly.

Float Switch

The float switch activates the pump when wastewater reaches a set level in the basin. A stuck, obstructed, or failed float can prevent the pump from starting or cause it to run longer than necessary.

Check Valve

The check valve prevents discharged wastewater from flowing back into the basin after the pump shuts off. A failed or obstructed valve can cause repeated cycling, unusual noise, and unnecessary wear on the pump.

Discharge Piping

The discharge pipe carries wastewater from the ejector basin into the building sewer. Incorrect sizing, clogs, leaks, or damaged connections can restrict flow and reduce system reliability.

Basin, Lid, and Seals

The basin collects wastewater until the pump activates. Its lid and seals help contain sewage and odors while supporting proper venting. Loose, damaged, or poorly sealed components can allow moisture and odors into the surrounding area.

Alarm and Controls

Some ejector systems include an alarm that activates when wastewater rises above the normal operating level. An alarm may indicate pump failure, a float problem, an obstruction, loss of power, or wastewater entering the basin faster than the system can remove it.

Ejector Pumps and Sump Pumps Are Different Systems

Ejector pumps and sump pumps may both be installed below a basement floor, but they handle different types of water.

A sump pump removes groundwater that collects around the foundation and helps protect the basement from water intrusion. An ejector pump handles sanitary wastewater from toilets, sinks, showers, laundry equipment, and other plumbing fixtures located below the main sewer line.

Because ejector pumps handle sewage, they require sealed basins and connections to the home’s sanitary drainage and vent systems. Heart provides separate sump pump services for groundwater and basement drainage concerns.

Ejector Pump Problems and the Sewer Line

A working ejector pump cannot discharge properly when the connected sewer pipe is blocked or damaged. In some cases, slow drainage or a wastewater backup that appears to be a pump problem actually originates farther downstream.

Heart checks the operation of the ejector pump and the accessible discharge system to determine where flow is being interrupted. If the problem involves buildup or an obstruction in the drainage system, drain cleaning may be necessary. Damage within the main wastewater pipe may require sewer line repair or replacement.

Keeping these services distinct allows the repair to address the component responsible for the backup instead of replacing a functioning pump.

Heart was an exceptional company to work with. Nicholas, our main HVAC technician was professional, knowledgeable, took time to explain and answer any questions I had.

Our 6 year old AC unit shut off. With two 5 year old English Sheepdogs that’s not a good thing bc they can overheat quickly.

I called to see what the issue was and thankfully it’s just the filters were dirty and all the numbers were going down to normal levels.

Nicholas was very kind and knowledgeable and educated me. He also explained their service contract.

I cannot say enough good things about their employees and Heart Services. They are just good people and exceptional company. They will be our call to company for furnace, electrical, sewer, AC, heating.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!!!!!!

I woke up to find a substantial leak from a pipe in my basement. Trusting Dave Logan’s recommendation, I contacted Heart Plumbing and Heating and they were able to send a plumber out right away. Davion was very professional and was able to give me an estimate within five minutes. The repair was done quickly and Davion was great in showing me his new tools that are used in connecting copper, without sweating them. My leak was repaired quickly and efficiently.

Justin has been well trained. He understood our system front to back. He proposed upgrades to the system. Most of them were to prevent issues from happening should a leak happen, when we least expect one. He is defiantly a seasoned veteran Happy to have him, look after our heat, water, electrical systems. These folks are well trained.

        Update June 2026
Had an issue with my electrical box on my patio. Heart came out with 48 hours to inspect why it wasn't working. The tech was friendly and professional. He was able to assess the issue and correct. In addition he made sure connections and outlets were properly installed. Also because we are in the program the visit and work was covered.

        Update 10/27/25
Corrections were need and Justin was great yet again. We needed the safety switch replaced that was inadvertently broken during the maintenance check the other week. While Justin was making that correction he turned on the humidifier and did a quick check to make sure it was running properly. Lastly, he noticed a small leak from hose leading to the drain. He put on a hose clamp and addressed the issue. Little quick fixes like that eliminate a need to have a another visit from a technician in the future. Thank you Justin.

        Updated 11/11/24
Wonderful service by Justin Anderson! We needed a couple of parts replaced for our furnace and he was able to get them ordered and installed within 24hrs. Once the work was complete, he stayed to ensure that the temperature of our home was in fact rising before leaving. He was very professional and easy to work with. Once again, we had to report another successful experience with HEART's HVAC team. Thank you.

        Updated 4/16/23
Great service by Jamie Hietman. Annual AC maintenance. AC is 10 years old and Jamie provide multiple options on services that are required at this life of the unit. Jamie even provided a priority list of items to perform this year that will provide a better quality on the unit over next several years.

He even assisted with when to turn off the humidifier and process to turn off for the summer and fall months.

        January of 2023
Had a humidifier put in to help with the humidity in our house. The house was hovering between 8%-15% on average before. Now the house runs between 30%-35%. Huge improvement on static and house being too dry.

        Spring of 2022
We also had a great experience with their plumbing division as well when we started hearing noise in the piping. Heart come out the same day, assessed the situation and provided their feedback on what our issue was. The tech was friendly and courtesy considering it was just an air pocket causing the issue.

        Summer is 2021
We had a whole house fan installed. The tech, Kelly Smith, was responsive, professional and up front about the process. Due to the pandemic and supply issues it took about 2 weeks to get the fan installed, but it was worth the wait. All that was left for us to do post installation was fill the drill holes and paint the ceiling around the unit, minor fix.

We love the fan, it cools the house within 30 minutes when on low and allows us to not have to run the AC continuously overnight after these hot summer days in Denver.

We joined the annual program which allows for annual tune up on the furnace, AC, plumbing and electrical. Also get discount on pricing, work being done.
